About the Electrão network

We are the largest management entity for used batteries and electrical equipment in Portugal. We have a structured collection network, with thousands of locations throughout the country, and several operational partners, which enables us to ensure everything from collection to the correct treatment and recycling of used electrical equipment. We also offer various free of charge collection solutions for organisations and individuals.

Collection sites

There are various types of sites to meet the needs of the population and the different types of equipment.

Fire stations

The humanitarian associations of volunteer firefighters that have joined the ‘Quartel Electrão’ campaign are a focal point of the network for the collection of used electrical equipment. Firefighters perform a dual public service, combining the protection of the population with the protection of the environment.

Schools

Educational establishments participating in the ‘Escola Electrão’ campaign are part of the Electrão collection network and offer the entire school community a neighbourhood service for the delivery of used electrical equipment.

Companies

Electrão offers companies a free of charge collection service for used electrical equipment. The hundreds of companies that are part of the network have access to an excellent service and can contribute to solidary initiatives, take part in campaigns promoted by Electrão, and involve their employees in these initiatives.

Door-to-door collection

Electrão offers a free service to collect used large household appliances directly from private homes. This is a pioneering project that is available in several municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Small electrical appliances and batteries can be added to the bulky electrical equipment collected door-to-door. This project helps to increase the recycling rates of various types of equipment, curb the tendency to accumulate, counter the parallel market and ensure the protection of human health and the environment.

Reception Centres

Waste management operators licensed to receive waste are part of the Electrão network as collection sites. They promote the delivery of equipment by companies, industries and other organisations and, at the same time, prepare the waste for recycling.

Urban Waste Management Systems

The Urban Waste Management Systems (SGRU's), part of the various Portuguese municipalities, are partners of the Electrão network in the collection and reception of used electrical equipment. They play a fundamental role in guaranteeing a proximity service for the collection of this waste throughout the country.

Logistics operators

Used electrical equipment is collected frequently to ensure the availability of the sites to collect more waste. Collection and transport are carried out in a safe manner that ensures that the electrical equipment goes to the correct destination. This transport to the operational partners is carried out by logistics operators.

Reception centres

Used electrical equipment collected in the Electrão Network is sent via transport operators to reception centres. These partners are licensed waste management operators who sort and separate the equipment according to the type of waste and prepare it for the subsequent treatment and recycling phase.

Treatment Operators

Treatment operators are equipped with technologies that enable them to separate hazardous substances from used electrical equipment and recover materials for recycling, reducing the associated environmental impacts.

At these units, the equipment undergoes a depollution process, which ensures that all the mandatory removal fractions are extracted, complying with all safety rules, to minimise the impact on the environment. These processes also allow for the recovery of materials that can be recycled and reused as new raw materials.

The recovery of materials that are subsequently sent for recycling or energy recovery makes it possible to calculate the corresponding recycling and recovery rates, which are benchmarks for the operation of the system.

Recycling used electrical equipment enables the recovery of critical raw materials, which have already been flagged by the European Union as essential elements for the digital and ecological transition.
