Collection sites

There are various types of sites to meet the needs of the population and the different types of equipment.

Fire stations

The humanitarian associations of volunteer firefighters that have joined the ‘Quartel Electrão’ campaign are a focal point of the network for the collection of used electrical equipment. Firefighters perform a dual public service, combining the protection of the population with the protection of the environment.

Schools

Educational establishments participating in the ‘Escola Electrão’ campaign are part of the Electrão collection network and offer the entire school community a neighbourhood service for the delivery of used electrical equipment.

Companies

Electrão offers companies a free of charge collection service for used electrical equipment. The hundreds of companies that are part of the network have access to an excellent service and can contribute to solidary initiatives, take part in campaigns promoted by Electrão, and involve their employees in these initiatives.

Reception Centres

Waste management operators licensed to receive waste are part of the Electrão network as collection sites. They promote the delivery of equipment by companies, industries and other organisations and, at the same time, prepare the waste for recycling.

Urban Waste Management Systems

The Urban Waste Management Systems (SGRU's), part of the various Portuguese municipalities, are partners of the Electrão network in the collection and reception of used electrical equipment. They play a fundamental role in guaranteeing a proximity service for the collection of this waste throughout the country.

Logistics operators

Used batteries is collected frequently to ensure the availability of the sites to collect more waste. Collection and transport are carried out in a safe manner that ensures that the electrical equipment goes to the correct destination. This transport to the operational partners is carried out by logistics operators.

Reception centres

Used batteries collected in the Electrão Network is sent via transport operators to reception centres. These partners are licensed waste management operators who sort and separate the equipment according to the type of waste and prepare it for the subsequent treatment and recycling phase.

Treatment Operators

The treatment operators are equipped with technologies that make it possible to separate hazardous substances from used batteries and recover materials for recycling, reducing the associated environmental impacts. In these units, the batteries go through a depollution process, which ensures that all the mandatory removal fractions are extracted, complying with all safety rules, in order to minimize the impact on the environment. These processes also allow for the recovery of materials that can be recycled and reused as new raw materials.

The recovery of materials that are subsequently sent for recycling or energy recovery makes it possible to calculate the respective recycling and recovery rates, which are benchmarks for the functioning of the system.

Recycling used batteries enables the recovery of critical raw materials, which have already been identified by the European Union as essential elements for the digital and ecological transition.
