What you need to know as a manufacturer or importer?

The principle of Extended Producer Responsibility makes it the responsibility of producers to recycle the waste from the batteries they place on the market in order to meet the targets set by legislation.

Who does it apply to?

The Extended Producer Responsibility Principle applies to manufacturers, producers, distributors and importers placing products or packaging on the market for the first time:

Manufacturers

Companies established in Portugal that manufacture or have designed or manufactured products under their own name or brand and sell them in Portugal.

Traders

Companies established in Portugal that resell, lease or otherwise make available the product on the market in Portugal under its own name or brand.

Distributors

Companies that sell, rent or otherwise make products available on the market, by means of distance communication techniques, directly to private users or non-private users in Portugal and is established in another Member State of the European Union or in a third country.

Importers

Companies that import products from a third country or from another Member State of the European Union.

What kind of batteries are covered?

Any battery, button cell, cell battery or accumulator that is hermetically sealed, can be carried by hand and is not an industrial battery or accumulator, nor a battery or accumulator for motor vehicles, namely batteries consisting of a single element. AA and AAA batteries, as well as batteries and accumulators used in mobile phones, laptops and notebooks, cordless power tools, toys, and household appliances. Some examples of chemical systems are: Alkaline, Button, Lead-Acid, Lithium Ion, Lithium, NiCd, NiMH and Zinc-Carbon

Batteries and accumulators designed exclusively for industrial or professional use that are placed directly on the market or incorporated into electrical and electronic equipment. Batteries or accumulators used as an emergency or back-up power source in hospitals, airports or offices, or designed exclusively for portable payment terminals in stores and restaurants and for barcode scanners in stores, those used in instrumentation or in other types of measuring apparatus, and those used in connection with renewable energy applications such as solar panels. Some examples of chemical systems are: Lead-Acid, Lithium Ion and NiCd.

What are the obligations?

These companies must ensure compliance with the following requirements

Join an integrated waste management system

Hire our environmental management services for used batteries and transfer your responsibilities to Electrão.

Register with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA)

From the Portuguese Environment Agency you can access SILiAmb (Integrated Environmental Licensing System), a platform created to make the contact between citizens and APA services more efficient and faster.

Report the quantities of products placed on the market

Annually, you have to declare these quantities to the APA, through SILiAmb., and periodically you have to fill in the declaration maps for batteries on the Electrão Members' Portal.
